From breakfast to bedtime, the kitchen is one of the hardest working rooms in your home. The last thing you want is the heart of the home to feel cheap. However, if it has one of these things going on it in, it’s time to make some changes.

Fluorescent Lighting

While the kitchen should feel bright and open, nothing says “cheap kitchen” like a long tube of fluorescent lighting wrapped in a plastic cover that’s beginning to yellow. In fact, anything that can be associated to a sterile, office building full of monotonous cubicles simply shouldn’t exist in your home. Basic light fixtures can be inexpensively replaced with either a nice pendant, recessed lighting that lights up your kitchen workspaces without crushing your soul.

Plastic Anything

While it may be tempting to save a buck by opting for plastic, a good rule to follow is to instead choose metal or wood if it’s going for something that is going to be on display. For example, if your trash can is going to be out in the open, splurge on a metal one. Or alternatively, if you do decide to go for plastic, tuck it away in a pull-out drawer or under the sink.

Cluttered Countertops

One of the biggest faux pas in the decorating world is cluttered-anything. In the kitchen, cluttered countertops can instantly make even the most expensive kitchens suddenly feel cheap, from small appliances like a coffee maker or a blender to piles of papers to just general junk that doesn't belong in the kitchen. Clean up the clutter and get organized by finding dedicated places to put your items away based on how often you use them. Keep your kitchen decluttered by opening and sorting mail the moment you get it, putting dishes in the dishwasher after each use, and keeping your regular items in an easily accessible drawer or cupboard.

Mismatched Appliances

No one really plans on having mismatched appliances, it’s just something that happens over time. Maybe the refrigerator goes out so you need to get a new one and fast, but you also know you eventually want to update to a stainless suite so you just start updating one appliance at a time. However, having mismatched appliances can look like you just threw together whatever remnants the local used appliance store had left. You can actually save big when you purchase complete kitchen packages, especially during sales.

Worn Out Cabinets

Cabinets take up a large portion of your kitchen and have one of the greatest impact on how your kitchen will look and function. If your home came with inexpensive builder-grade cabinets styled from a different decade or a previous owner tried to update with poorly crafted particle-board doors that are now bubbling or falling apart, it may not matter how much you try to update with paint, lights, or new appliances - your kitchen will still be held back.

Linoleum Floors

Since the 1950s, linoleum floors have been a popular option for kitchen flooring for its durability and affordability. While linoleum can be a cheap alternative, it is just that: cheap. There are plenty of beautiful, inexpensive floor options, such as vinyl or tile, available today that there really isn’t a need to settle for linoleum floors.
